Vietnam

An incredible road trip of more than 2200 km that took me from the warm south Vietnam to the lush mountains of the far north. Through this extraordinary country rich in history and traditions, always looking for the contact with the people who are without a doubt the most amazing thing you'll find in Vietnam.

- The Lonely Bicycle -

Although Ho Chi Minh City is known for being the motorbike Capital of the World, with estimates of more than four million motorbikes, there are still many non-motorized transport, such as carts and bicycles, which are lost in the river of scooters that invade the streets of the
most populous and chaotic city in Vietnam.

- The Image of an Idea -

"For a photographer a true story is not an address to go with the right filters and sophisticated machines. A story means to read, study, be ready. Photographing means to seek in things what we already understand with our head. A great picture is the image of an idea." T.T.

Every day after sunset on the riverside of the old town of Hoi An hundreds of paper lanterns are released on the river. The old buildings and the streets are crowded with locals and tourists, the smell of incense mixes with the food prepared on the street.
The air is warm, from the many restaurants come out every type of music, the city is alive.

- A Long Day -

I met this child on the riverfront of Hoi An, was selling lanterns with his little brother, when some tourists have insisted to take pictures with them. I think it's a beautiful expression, a mixture of boredom and complacency. Just before he had told me that every day after school he sells lanterns and bracelets to tourists to help his family, I think I fully understand his expression, he has had a very long day.

- Morning Market-

I love the local markets in Asia, the atmosphere, the smells, the sounds, voices and people, especially people. Farmers of the surrounding countryside, fishermen and artisans crowded almost on top of each other, in a tangle of human beings. It seems to be catapulted back in time, a time away from modernity and consumerism.

- Green Paradise -

I am in the Lao Cai Province in the far north of Vietnam, a few tens of kilometers norther and there is China. Outside the small town of Sa pa the scenery is magnificent, high green mountains rising on the horizon are surrounding the entire area, the less steep slopes and valleys are full of rice terraces, the colors are incredible, the fields are lush green, the rice is almost ready, the harvest is only weeks away. In the area there are a myriad of tiny villages inhabited by farmer who live by cultivating the land in this corner of paradise.

- The Ancient Town of Hoi An -

Hoi An Ancient Town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century.

Its buildings and its street plan reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that have combined to produce this unique heritage site.

During my trip, I spent a lot of time with people; in the cities, in the markets, vendors, children, people of many nations, cultures and religions. I always found it interesting how photography can become a means of human contact, the reason why two people meet and talk for a few minutes.

- The Eye of the Cyclone -

One of my last nights in Vietnam I climbed on the roof of the seventh floor of the guest house where I was staying to photograph the evening traffic in this big roundabout on the east side of the busiest area of the city.
Behind me extends the Old Quarter of Hanoi the oldest area of the city, small streets and tiny alleys, always full of activity,
tourists, vendors, taxi drivers, a very charming city. The roundabout distributes traffic towards the bridge that cross the Red River.

A woman sitting on the sidewalk with the wares on display, in the confusion and chaos of trading between sellers and other tourists, this woman lost in thought, she seems to fly away from the market, walk away with the mind, perhaps thinking of a person which it is far away, or maybe to the difficulties that come with winter.

I rented a motorbike, and I'm venturing into the beautiful valley south of Sa Pa. The landscape is beautiful, small villages nestled in vast rice terraces. Every view is unique and worth a stop. Along the way they encounter many people living in the villages, as this little girl who, if I understood correctly, she is 7 years old and lives in the village of Cat Cat with his family.
